Humanness on The Internet

Today, the internet plays a big role in our daily lives, especially in communication. Previously, people sent letters or faxes to their business counterparts. In the informal context, people used to make phone calls whenever they had to contact people. However, today, people can easily deal business by sending the paper work through emails. People no longer call each other, but they chat online. Internet seems to make our lives easier. Internet saves our time. Hence, we can save our time to do other things.

On the contrary, internet causes people to depend on it too much. For instance, people say that they cannot live without the internet these days. The net becomes a very crucial part of their lives; furthermore, some even become addicted to it. When this happens, people no longer use the internet as a tool for communication. Thus, it leads people to connect to the internet anytime and anywhere.

So, how can we employ the internet in human communication without sacrificing the ‘human’ aspect of communication??

As human beings, people have emotions. In order to show emotions, people have to communicate face to face in order to perform it. One way to show your emotions is communicating via the phone to substitute the face to face communication. It is believed that the ones speaking are able to convey his/her emotions through his/her voice. In the internet context, people cannot totally communicate their emotions. People express their opinions and ideas via words. However, this might not be the case anymore. Due to the technology advancement today, people can communicate via the video conferencing.

In reality, even though the video conferencing helps us to convey our emotions as depicted in our facial expressions through in the web, it still lacks the basic human feelings. People cannot totally feel the deep emotions through image on the screen only. People have to meet each other in order to do it. Hence, traditional face to face communication still has more advantage.

In today’s technological advancement era, it is impossible not to use technology as a part of our lives, but we have to limit ourselves. We use the internet as a medium in communication, and not to depend our communication solely on the internet. Hence, we have time to engage in the real world communication, which is the face to face communication. Thus, limiting our time in engaging on the internet is necessary. Additionally, knowing the right way to use the net is also crucial which means not to be addicted to the net.

Is there any other way that we can employ the internet without sacrificing the ‘human’ aspects??

  1. Internet does take away a certain amount of our 'human' appeal in terms of emotions. However, we cannot denied the fact that it can make people smile at themselves upon receiving messages from the other party. This is evidently shown in the use of mobile phones, which performs the same tasks as the internet, known as CMC.

If messages posted on the internet were deemed to have lost the 'human' aspects, why then do people gets angry over them, sueing people who post such messages? Clearly, it shows that CMC did not really lost the 'human' aspects.

Perhaps, expressions could not be seen. As long as there is no misinterpretation of thoughts, there is no reason to forgo a portion of the 'human' aspects for other benefits, like the saving of travelling time.

  2. it is true that face-to-face communication is more effective in a way, while i think we will feel handicapped if we live without hand-phones and internet. although they are not transactional communications, they still facilitate us and make our lives easier.

  3. Yes, it is true that internet and all modes of modern communication tools make it easier to be keep in touch with everyone we want to but old face-to-face communication is still the best. Modern communication helps a lot while the old face-to-face communication is impossible, and make us don't feel the distance, in a way.

  4. I don't think internet can replace face to face communication. Face to face communication reveals true feelings and true emotion which the social networkings do not. Also, some people were so addicted to the internet that they neglected other things like relationship and family. But undeniable internet has been an effective tool to reach out people. I think everybody should have to find a balance point in between.

  5. I feel that if there is no internet now, things would be so much more difficult. More time would be needed to get the information that they need and communication between people living far apart would break down.

However, no matter how good technology is, it would always lose to face-to-face communication. That is because, techology could never give you the feeling that you can get when talking to your loved ones face to face instead of through the web cam.

  10. In todays world, Internet is a neccessity. We perform so many activities online and therefore communciate regularly online. Internet does pose the risk of replacing facce to face communication. As, some find it easier to communicate in the virtual world.

However, face to face communication is still the richest form of communication. Teenagers and adults alike need to switch off from the virtual world and create greater exhanges face to face.

  11. In today's world, we simply cannot rely solely on the good old face-to-face communication anymore, but we try to do a little bit of everything. In other words, we use the Internet to communicate because it saves us time and effort but not do to excess to the extent that we become addicted to the net. Occasionally, we still arrange meetings with people for a face-to-face communication because it creates that special bond between us and the people we know.

All in all, there are always the pros and cons of everything; face-to-face communications and the net and that is why we learn to do a little bit of both and not depend on just one source of communication.

  12. I think that face to face communication still wins over the communication through the internet. Both of the communictaion form is different. However, if the communicator is separated by distance, it can serves as substitutes. But if the communicators still can meet each other, it is better to use face to face communication. Hence, the communication through the net is better used as a tool and not as a daily substitute. Additionally, communication in the internet is limited. For instance, people who know each other from the internet will apparently arrange to meet and engage in face to face communication.

  13. Face to face is always better. The internet helps keep communication in tact. We're so used to be able to connect without seeing facial expressions and the old fashioned face to face. I think it helps bridge countries, peoples into one big mass of opinions. I would still prefer meeting someone face to face. It might seem old fashioned in a few years though. And we've got the technology to ichat, to see each other through a camera, it's almost just as good and face to face conversations. --Veronica

  14. The internet is still very human. The only thing that makes it not human is the fact that we can't see each other. If I talk to someone I've never met before they might be someone I wouldn't usually talk to because of the way they look. Most of the times we are unaffected by the way someone looks through the internet, because we can't see them. We judge people on the way the look, and that's the difference between face to face, and talking through the internet.

  15. I agree with all the opinions above, internet communication will not be as good as face-to-face communication. The feeling is different when you use internet to communicate and literally communicating in face-to-face communication. Non-verbal cues which are important in interaction are more obvious in face-to-face communication.

Although technology is getting more sophisticated, the traditional way of communicating is still the best.

  16. Slowly but surely, technology is taking over lots of things, however, traditional communication, face to face where you can feel , touch and hugs are still preferable and best.

  17. In my opinion, I still feel more comfortable communicating face to face. Sure, technology has made it possible to communicate with different people around the world easily. It is great to be able to use video conferencing in business as well as contacting our loved ones. But! What can a webcam do? Can it give you hugs? Can it give you a definite perception on whoever your conference party is? Can it give you kisses and warm wishes?
