What do you think when you see these pictures?? Will you think that the glass is half full or half empty?? What about the pie, a half full pie or a half empty pie?? Finally, the guy, is he having a half full head of hair or a half empty head of hair??
There is no right or wrong answer regarding these questions. Everybody perceives things differently. Therefore, a person can think of things as half full or half empty. When a person thinks that the thing is half full, he/she looks at things from the positive point of view. Conversely, when a person thinks that the thing is half empty, he/she look at things from the negative perspective.
There are many factors that can influence a person’s way of perceiving things. In the selection process, there are individual characteristics, mass media, habits of family or friends, psychological state, and many other things within a person’s environment. For instance, a person’s current psychological state can affect his/her way of perceiving things. Current psychological state can also impact a person’s decision making ability. When a person is experiencing hardship in his/her life, such as, retrenchment, he/she might see things negatively at the moment she is experiencing the hardship. It is because that his/her mood might not be good at that time. On the other hand, when a person is feeling extraordinary happy, perhaps because that day is his/her birthday when everyone in her family tries to make him/her happy, he/she might see perceive things in a positive way.
From the example, it shows that many factors in our environment can affect our way of perceiving things. There is no right or wrong way of perceiving and interpreting things. It is just the way different person with different thought which resulted from his/her cultural, social, economical background perceive the things. Hence, what do you think about perception?? Is it possible to make everyone perceive things from the same perspective??

People approach things differently. Reactive is the most common thing that we see from people when unexpected things happen. Things happen for a good , bad or different reason. When "good" things happen , most people will be able to share common or similar perpective, because people gain - glass is half full. But when bad things happen, perspective is depending on ones' feel, reactive is the most common we see. " why ?" is the first question we ask then come "who's to blame?" - glass is half empty. Experience in life will educate oneself to see things from positive end and outside the box. When you look out, you see more , when you look in , is limited . There are only 24 hours in a day , no matter where you live , asia, america, africa, or even in north pole. We have a choice , we can choose to be positive and have glass half full thru good, bad and different time or to be negative and have glass half empty. We can share our perspective with people but we CANNOT MAKE people perceive things from the same perspective .. Like an old phrase says " You can lead a horse to the water,but you can't make it drink ..People, like horses, will only do what they have a mind to do.

from what i had heard, people who think that the glass is half empty are usually people who think about things more negatively. whereas for people who see the cup as half full are people who think about things more positively.
ReplyDeletehence, in one situation, there are many perspectives. for example, when one smokes, some people may think it as an unhealthy habit, whereas some may just think that its cool.
also like during group proj, if everybody have the same ideas/ perspectives, wouldnt it be abit dull?
hence, i believed that its alomost a 99.999% that it is impossible for everybody to have the same perspectives =)

well, i personally feel that it is quite difficult to have people see a thing from the same perspective.
ReplyDeleteit is totally depend on each person's interpretation as well as how he/she evaluates the message. If everything that people see has the same perspective, then there will be no debate or argument in this world. But fact is not always like that, hence i totally believe that it is not possible to have the same perspective for each individual.
A person can share his/her perspective with another, as you have mentioned; through mass media, families & friends, but it does not mean that he/she thinks the same way as a person does since people have their own mindset in looking at things. Everyone looks at things at a different angle. We do not expect everyone to focus on the same way of thinking as our own, do we? It depends on how the brain handles a situation or perception of something. For instance, a person sees a video of a lady rotating in circles – at times, he/she sees the lady rotating in a clockwise direction, but then again, he/she also sees her rotating in an anti-clockwise direction, so which one is it? It’s pretty much seen in both directions. It all depends on which side of the hemispheres (brain) one is using. Relating this back to perceptions; the right hemisphere offers negative emotions (fearful mournful feelings), while the left hemisphere generates positive emotions. Experiencing a situation that handles being pessimistic, these emotions are triggered by the right side of the brain and vice versa.

i think it depends on how you're feeling and your mood. so if you feel good you'll think positive. if you feel bad you'll think negative. media does change people's thoughts and opinions if the person is easily influenced. -- veronica
ReplyDeleteperception.=.perception...
ReplyDeleteperspective.=.perspective..
people can use either way interpreting the way
they look at things. can be positive can be negative. being positive is better than being negative. imagine if it doesn't..ehmn ---nini
I do think that it is possible for people to have close but not the same perception to things. One such example will be how a person view the theatre. While some may view it as a place for lecture, others may see it as a place for movie, while others may percieve it as a place for musical. Then, if we bother to elaborate and explain the use of this theatre, then we will be able to reach a close but not similiar perceptions.
ReplyDeleteThus said, i do agree with you that the emitional state of a person can very much affect how a person perceievs something and i think you have provided a good example to illustrate this. However i will also like to point out that we should view this topic of perception of a broader basis and not just limit it to one factor alone.
I agree, peoples perception is like water and oil. Having the same perception like other people is a very small percentage. There are factors that affect our perception about things wherether it's a half full pie or half eaten pie, our mind speaks itself. To have people having the same perception is possible but it's a very small chances that it may happen

It is most likely impossible to have people perceive things from the same perspective as each perception is ruled by one's state of mind... positive or negative, optimist or pessimist...
ReplyDeleteI wish everybody can see things from the same perspective ( positive one of course) or glass half full , but apparently it is not posibble...

Positive thinking is to see the glass as half full or head half bold :):) .. but in reality , emotional state of mind plays big part of how oneself perceive things, positive or negative perspective . If we have 2 people in different state of mind , then it is impossible to have them to see things from the same perspective
ReplyDeleteI think it is not possible to have people to perceive things from the same perceptive unless they are all in the emotional state of mind ...
ReplyDeleteIt will be nice to have people perceive things from the same positive perspective , but it is more likely not possible. Emotional does influence people on how they look at things and relay the message , good or bad ,positive or negative..
ReplyDeletepeople say everything is possible , but apparently having people perceive things from the same perspective is not possible .. arguments , reasoning, debates occur because people has different way to perceive things . I agree with you that social economy, cultural determine one's perceiving things ..
ReplyDeleteI don't think we can have people to see things from the same angle if we are talking about positive or negative persception ..
ReplyDeleteIt is always better to be able to see things from positive side ( glass half full ), but apparently that is not the case all the time as emotional state will effect how people see things . can we have people perceive things from teh same perspective? it is most likely not doable as each individual has their own way to see things , depends on their emotional intelligence
