Modern Communication Models

Nowadays, people like everything that saves their time. Similarly, in communication, people like the easy way to contact or inform each other about a certain happenings. This can happen through mobile phones, where people can call and deliver their messages through phone conversations. People can also text their friends or colleague about the important information that their friends or colleague should know. If it is not necessary to meet each other, people will like to communicate with each other through this high-tech communication tools.

Another way to communicate is through the online tools. For instance, the social networking websites are experiencing their popularity in the recent years. One of the popular websites is Facebook. Through Facebook, people can do many communication actions, such as, send a message, chat and post a comment. Those that I have mentioned are only the basics. There are many other things that you can explore once you have a facebook account. You can play various games, like mafia wars which my brother plays every day and you can also post as many pictures as you wish. In addition, people can make new friends who they get to know from their close friends and people can also find their old friends from their kindergarten or primary school who they lost their contact, probably since they moved to another school.

Hence, are the mobile phone and the online communication tools going to replace the traditional face to face communication completely?
I don’t think so. One of the fundamental reasons is that we are social beings. As for the mobile phone case, people still need to meet each other after they talk in the mobile phone. Let’s say if you talk with you colleague about an important business agreement which requires both of you to meet up and talk about it, then you will need to arrange a meeting. What if we can just talk on the phone about the agreements in detail and just send the agreement to each other’s office to be singed? Well, apart from that, as a social being and in order to satisfy the transactional model of communication, people need to arrange meetings (face to face communications).

According to the transactional model of communication which improves the linear (one way communication) and the interactive (communication without face – face meeting) models, communication is a process of simultaneous exchange and mutual influence and exchange between communicators. Transactional model of communication also happens within the existence of the surrounding environment. Hence, a physical existence of the two communicators is essential. Likewise, in the facebook case, even though the online communication seems to be efficient and engaging, people still need to interact directly by doing a face – face communication. Additionally, come friends in the social networking sites are only online friends who you do not meet in the real world. This strengthen the idea that face – face communication is a better way of communicating where you get know real world friends and not “online friends”.

  1. Yes...experts say less than 10% of communication occur through words...i.e. more than 90% of communication is actually body language, tone of voice, facial expressions etc... None of these can be done through facebook or even mobile phones, so face-to-face communication is still the best. The new tech is very useful though to make the world a little smaller...

  2. It's nice having communication through facebook and the phone since it helps people stay in touch with each other (especially in long distances). Face to face conversations are still the best but now technology is taking over. Information is easier through the internet and blogs like this one. Online friends are never the same as real world friends of course.

  5. Face to face comunication is a little different than others because you use face to face communication to get to know others better however facebooks, internet, phones are playing big part of our daily life so all types of communications have plus side and negative side

  6. The world right now is experiencing globalazation so does technology. Internet helps us for the most part either surfing the web or communications but we need to make adjustment so that we wont be relying to much on technology

  7. However, with the aid of advanced technologies, face-to-face communication can still occur online via webcam. Does that consider a form of online communication as well?
If it is, will it replace our face-to-face mode of communication?
I personally would choose to rely on other mode of communication. Facing an audience in front of oneself can be stressful sometimes, depending on the situation, especially in interviews. At least over the internet and other gadgets, I get a chance to think through what my intended thoughts will be. When I have a face-to-face converstion, I tend to sprout things without much thoughts and reflect only later. Sometime, this way of communicating can lead to other problems due to our insensitivity and it will be too late. Nevertheless, internet does not provide much privacy especially with the increase knowledge people have in technology. In the end, transaction communication will still be needed and will stay on as long as Humans are around. :)

  8. Do we see anyone not carrying a communication device wherever they go? Hardly anyone doesn’t have a communication device with them in or outside their home. It’s man’s second best friend! (Dogs are man’s best friend so mobile devices will have to come 2nd) It’s simply hard to communicate with people 24/7 if we don’t have a mobile phone. We are too dependent on it. Because if we didn’t, we would have to go around meeting our friends just so we can tell them whatever it is we need to say to them. How time consuming would it be if everyone were to go around doing that? Not saying that meeting up with friends is a bad thing; having met face-to-face occasionally is good to catch up on old times when it comes to people whom we have not met for god knows how long. So basically we can’t say that one mean of communication has to go, we need them both!

  9. Face to face communications are still preferable these days however as technology and one's activities increase tremendously, face to face communications become less and taken over by devices such as phn, videocam, text messages, blackberry and etc. Face to face conversation become less required but still important in daily communications with the help of technology .

  10. Basic human communications is face to face, starting from the day we are born . Touches, expressions, tones and etc are basic communications thru eyes. Percentage of face to face communications can be broken down based on necessity and importance. For example, daily face to face communications parents and kids prior to adulthood are necessity. Friendship face to face communications are based on importance , timing, locations and etc. True, lots of communications are being done thru gagdets such as phn, fb, skype and etc but eventually, people are setting up time and place to have have face to face communications, such scheduling vacations , trips and etc. Face to face communications are still the best and preferable these days, but cannot be done as often as we want to ...

  15. ya, I also share your opinion:)
High-tech is plausible in the sense that it makes our life easier and more convenient, but by no way can it totally replace our face-to-face communication. Can a couple maintain their relationship only through phone calls? Sometime even webcam cannot satisfy their desire to see each other by their "own eyes". And for facebook, many people got hundreds of friends, but I'm wondering how can he/she manage to keep in touch with all those "friends"..so can I say some of those friends are not really friends?
Anyway, we cannot underestimate the value of our advanced technologies for that we will feel handicapped if we live without them. So, why not we make good use of them and still don't abandon our most efficient transactional communication? haha
